Transition pieces and monopiles for Akita wind farm

BigLift Shipping's flagship mv Happy Star has been contracted to transport 4 monopiles and 11 transition pieces for the Akita Noshiro wind farm, Japan’s first large-scale offshore wind project. Kajima Corporation, the project’s EPCI contractor, contacted BigLift to complete the logistic puzzle.

With a very short lead time, grillage and saddles were designed and manufactured by BigLift, all in accordance to project requirements.

The TPs are 33.1 metres high and weigh 399 mt (5 pieces) and 338 mt (6 pieces). The largest monopile is 72 metres long with a diameter of 6 metres, weighing 759 mt. The diameter of the other three monopiles is 5.5 metres with a length varying between 50.7 and 55.7 metres. Their weight varies between 365 mt and 406 mt.

The 139 MW Akita-Noshiro project comprises two sites off Akita Port and Noshiro Port. Thirteen Vestas V117-4.2 MW typhoon variant turbines will be installed at the Akita site, while the Noshiro site will comprise 20 turbines.
